Imagine what would be possible if the Church united in action

Uniting for a restored Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

Something new is unfolding around the world. God is on the move, calling the Churches, Christian community organisations and business people to step into places of struggle with hope, healing, and renewed focus. And that same stirring is being felt here in our own city.

A city beautiful yet broken

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is a city of stunning beauty and potential. We are diverse, youthful, creative, intelligent, and generous — he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

But our greatest resource, our people, are hurting. Many struggle with the cost of living, food insecurity, unemployment, and inequality. Families are under strain, young people face unprecedented pressures, and too many experience loneliness and despair.

“I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” - John 17:23

Through greater connection and coordination, the wider Church has the opportunity to multiply its impact across some of our city’s most urgent needs:

A focus on 5 pressing issues

Auckland’s known homeless population surged from 426 (Sept 2024) to 809 (May 2025). Women now represent 46% of the national total (Source)

Homelessness

1 in 3 children in Auckland (33%) live in households where food runs out often or sometimes; a significant increase from 16% two years prior. (Source)

Food insecurity

Family violence and breakdown

Police attend a family violence incident in Auckland every 12 minutes; the cost is estimated at $2.3 billion annually. (Source)

NZ ranks fourth lowest among OECD countries for child wellbeing; one in five young people aged 15–24 experience psychological distress. (Source)

Youth wellbeing

Many Aucklanders live without meaningful connections, leading to loneliness and depression. (Source)

Social isolation

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”- James 2:17

As a next step, we invite churches, Christian community organisations and business people to gather for collective prayer and planning – focused on these five challenging issues.

Together we’ll identify initiatives already in place, ways to better support one another, and opportunities for collective impact.

Come to be encouraged, supported, and part of what’s possible:

It is our hope that the Prayer & Collaboration Forum, will be the first step in a journey to a shared vision – building a unified, impactful movement for our city.

Inspired by a successful faith initiative in Bristol, UK, we are creating a framework in which to build unity, collaboration, and long-term transformation. Moving forward with God and one another, with one heart.

A city-changing vision

“Your people will rebuild long-deserted ruins, building anew on foundations laid long before you. You will be known as Repairers of the Cities and Restorers of Communities.” - Isaiah 58:12

Background and coordination

One Heart Auckland was born when Christian leaders in Auckland noted the success of a similar movement in Bristol, and began to dream about what might be possible here, in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Since our first gathering in March 2025, we have been meeting and praying, seeking God’s leading and wisdom for what this might become. While the coordination is being provided by the Auckland Church Network, this is not about one group or organisation – but about all of us, the whole Body of Christ, responding together to create greater impact across our city.
